Addis Ababa has so many oldest houses and buildings. Among these three historical buildings and houses are considered and are described below.

Menelik’s Elfign

It is the precursor of the big “Gibbi” at Arat Kilo. It is about 100 m far from Entoto Saint Mary Church. It has an oval shape and was built by soil and stone. Its area is estimated to be 60-70 sq.km. Its roof is corrugated iron sheet and decorated with beautiful wood. Its age is estimated to be above 100 years.

Bitweded Haile Giorgis’s House

It is found in Arada Woreda infront of Saint George Church. It has three floors. Bitweded Haile Giorgis has worked as Prime Minister, Commerce and Foreign Affairs Minister during Lig Eyasu regime. This house was a Municipality and now it is giving service as Woreda Court. Its age is estimated to be 90 years and it was called Addis Ababa’s tallest building in the past.

Alfred Eles House

It is found on the way from Degol Square to ” Eribekentu”. Alfred is Swiss citizen and he was Emperor Menelik’s engineer and advisor for 29 years. He made a channel and brought water to the big Emperor’s Palace. He helped the Ethiopian government to sign an agreement regarding Ethio-Djibouti Railway with a foreign company. He started a modern school in his house and helped in the expansion of postal service. As the building is related with the foundation of Addis Ababa, its age is estimated to be above 100 years.
