The Ethio-Djibouti Rail Way
1. Establishment
The Ethio-Djibouti Railway was set up with an equal joint ownership of the two governments for the benefit of the two peoples. The Railway served and serves the interests of peoples all along the along the Railway from the port of Djibouti way up to Addis Ababa
The Railway was reestablished by the two governments making it an exemplary enterprise of joint cooperation. The Ethio-Djibouti Railway was reestablished by the Ethio-Djibouti governments in March 1982 make it a joint ownership its liability being limited to its capital.
2. Capital
The capital of the Railway is jointly owned by the two governments and is Bar 4.325.000 or 363,300,000 DE.
3. Purpose
The purpose of the Railway is to give freight and passenger transport services in and between Ethiopia and Djibouti. The tariff is approved by administrative council of the Railway.
4. Duration of the agreement
The agreement made by and between Ethiopian and Djibouti governments on the Railway made in 1982 lasts for 50 years, and unless one of the parties requests for negotiation the agreement remains in force for another term. The parties to the agreement may by mutual agreement revise the agreement.
5. Employees
When the construction of the Railway was commenced in 1897 from the port of Djibouti, the task has called people from far and near countries. Thus, there were people of different nationalities, Turks, Indians, Armenian„ Arabs from different countries.
Employees devotion for their work was not thwarted by divisive wars going on at that epoch. Without this devotion it was certain that the construction work would not have progressed to reach completion.
At the present time the Railway employees 2.500 workers excluding the daily labors.
6. The Rail Way Line
The construction of the railway was commenced in 1897 from the port of Djibouti. The types and weight of the Rail laid at that time were the standard at time.
At the moment the Railway has different types of Rails laid all along the 781 K/M.
The Railway not only connects Addis Ababa to the port of Djibouti but it has been instrumental for foundation and growth of different cities all along the Railway line, towns like Dire Dawa, Nazareth and Djibouti itself.
