The Lakes of Ethiopia fall into two groups: rift valley takes and highland lakes. Most of them are located in the rift valley where there are eight lakes varying in size and depth. In addition to the lakes in the rift valley there are also lakes in the highlands. All these lakes are habitats for great variety fishes and birds. The fishes are sources of food start and the birds are important for the attraction of tourists. Some of the lakes are also contributing for navigation purposes. Four lakes among the lakes of Ethiopia are considered for this issue and are described below.
Lake Wonchi :- It is found in the region of shewa, in a mountainous setting west of Addis ababa. This lake is one of the smaller examples of the lakes of volcanic origin. It covers an area of 14 K.M2. It fills a multiple crater and is so interesting and highly invites visitors.
Lake Zuquala:- It is a classical crater lake found near Debre- Zeit in the Summit of Mt. Zuquala. The name “Lake Zuquala” is given to it! in reference to the name of the mountain in which it is found. It is another example of smaller lakes of volcanic nature. It as wide as 0.5 K.M2
Lake Ashenge :- Similar to the above two lakes it is of volcanic nature but different from them in the way that! it is grouped in the larger volcanic lakes. It has an area! of 20km.2 and a maximum depth of 25m. It is found in the region of Wollo, North-East of Ethiopia.
Lake Tana :- It is the largest lake in the country located in the north central highlands at an altitude of 1. 785m. above sea level and is a flooded river basin dammed by a lava flow which now forms the spectacular Blue Nile falls that generates high amount of hydro electric power. The area of the lake reaches to 3600 km2 with a maximum depth of 9 m. and is suitable for navigation.
