A wide Ethiopia is known for its wild animals. A wide variety are known to exist within the limit of the country as endemic or non-endemics. In this issue only four of the non-endemics are shown.

Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus Amphibius)

Is a huge animal that weighs from 2000-3000 KG. The body is large and thick, with short legs. The head is very big, with small eyes and ears, but the mouth is enormous. It is 400-450 cm. long,

In Ethiopia, the “Hippo” is found in lake Tana, Chamo and Abaya as well as in big rivers like OMO, Akobo, Barn and Dedessa. The animal spends the days in the Water or Sunning itself on the shore. At night travels far in search of food.

Gerenuk (Lithocranlus Walleri)

Also known as Giraffe Gazelle because of its long neck and legs, weighs from 40 to 50 kg. The height at the shoulder is from 90 to 105 cm. The color is a deep yellowish red on back, paler on the sides, and it has a white belly.

In Ethiopia; it lives in the dry steppes and deserts of Danakil, Harar, Ogaden and Borena It feeds on succulents and acacia leaves.

Kirk’s Dik-Dik (Riinchotragus Kirk)

is the smallest antelope about the size of a hare. it is about 66 cm. long with a weight of 13.5 kg. The color of the body is silver-grey above, reddish below and the legs are white inside. This animal inhabits the bushy Plains of Ethiopia.

Salt’s Dik-Dik (Rhynchotagus guenthri)

is a tiny graceful antelope with larger eyes and very thin legs. It is about 36 ans. long with a weight of about 4 kg. This animal is found in hot plains and deserts without bush, in Danakil and the Ogaden.
