ICAO’S 50th Anniversary

On 7 December 1994, the world commemorates the 50th Anniversary of one of the truly defining events of this century-the establishment of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Last year, on 7 December 1993, Flag-raising ceremonies heralding the observances also took place in ICAO member states throughout the world.

On 11 September 1944, 53 states were invited to participate in the conference to be held at Chicago starting from November 1, 1944 for the purpose of deciding the future of international civil aviation. The Chicago conference was attended by 700 delegates from. 52 states for 37 days. The outcome of the deliberation was the drafting and signing of the convention on International Civil Aviation, formally known as the ‘Chicago Convention’, at Chicago on 7 December 1944.

Although the Chicago Convention, ICAO founding instrument, was signed by 38 states at Chicago on the historic date, 7 December 1944, contracting states of the organization had grown to 183 in February of 1994.

7 December 1994, it has been 50 years since the signing of the convention which has affected the efficient, safe and economical international air transport attained today. ICAO’S 50th birthday is being celebrated colorfully in contracting states.

The 29th session of the ICAO Assembly declared December 7 each year, starting in 1994, as ‘International Civil Aviation Day’. Thus, the 50th Anniversary of ICAO coincides with the first celebration of `International Civil Aviation Day’. Member states and partner organizations were to

As Ethiopia is a founding of ICAO, the Ethiopian civil Aviation Authority in collaboration with the Ethiopian Postal service, issued by these postal stamps both by the authority and ICAO’s logos.
