It was meant to provide service for around 20,000 surrounding population and then during the Italian invasion, the Italians added a few more buildings so that they can treat more wounded soldiers. Most of the buildings that exist now were built then. Currently the hospital is believed to serve approximately to 5 million people every year.
However with the growing number of patients and the limited patient beds, it was very challenging to provide the intended medical service. The university has played more attention to alleviate these problems and started working very closely with the government and partner organizations and came to the realization of 1000 bed specialized referral hospital. The three new buildings are intended for different purposes.
