Ethiopian Airlines History

Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing and most profitable airline in Africa, made its flight to Cairo in 1964. A truly indigenous pan-African carrier owned, managed and operated by Africans, Ethiopian has become a global carrier with an extensive African and international network covering 78 destinations stretching across five continents and using 61 modern aircraft with an average age of 7 years.

Since 2010, Ethiopian has been successfully implementing its fast, profitable and sustainable growth 15 year strategic roadmap, dubbed vision 2025. By 2025, the airlines aims to become the leading airline group in Africa, generating 10 billion dollars in revenue, carrying 18 million passengers annually and uplifting 820,000 tons of cargo per year.

Ethiopian-star Alliance membership

Ethiopian joined the world’s largest and most prestigious airline network; star Alliance, in December 2011. This has allowed Ethiopian customers to enjoy seamless travel experience with access to 21,900 daily flights to 1,328 airports in 195 countries as well as more than 1000 lounges. This is an affirmation of Ethiopian as a global airline with global standards.

Through its star Alliance membership Ethiopian offers its customers the benefits of being a member of a global airline alliance: world-wide reach via the extensive network, seamless travel and status recognition through the frequent flyer programs. Ethiopian Sheba miles participants can now earn and burn miles when flying on any star Alliance member carrier, with the collected miles counting towards achieving Sheba miles, silver club or gold club status. In addition, all Sheba miles silver club and gold club customers receive the respective Alliance silver and gold benefits every time they travel on a star Alliance member carrier. Ethiopian also extends the alliance silver and gold benefits to status customers from all other star alliance member carriers when they fly on Ethiopian.

Ethiopian took delivery of the state of the art and game-changing, Boeing 787 Dream liner aircraft named Africa first in august 2012 becoming the first African airline and the first outside of Japan to own and operate this aircraft. The dream liner is the most technologically advanced and ultra-modern commercial aircraft in the world. Ethiopian-Boeing 777-200LR

Ethiopian is the first Africa airline to operate the Boeing 777-200LRs: it took delivery of the first one in November 2010.Boing 777-200 LRS also known as the world liners are the longest range commercial aircraft. These aircraft are virtually to connect any two cities in the world nonstop.

Configured with 34 seats in cloud Nine and 287 in Economy class which are all equipped with on-demand entertainment systems, the 777-200 LRs carry more passengers and more revenue cargo farther than any other jetliner. The air craft are equipped with the latest technology that allows more efficient in flight service, spacious cabin and more leg room.

Ethiopian-Boeing 777-300ER

Ethiopian is the first African airline to operate the Boeing 777-300ER. It took delivery of this aircraft in November 2013. Ethiopian B777-300 gives passengers the best possible travel experience with its spacious cabin interior, high ceiling, advanced in flight entertainment system, increased stowage capability and additional cargo uplift flexibility.

Ethiopian B777-300ER seats nearly 400 passengers in a two class configuration, making it the biggest aircraft in Ethiopian fleet. The aircraft provides additional capacity and flexibility on popular routes, such as Guangzhou, Washington, DC and Dubai.

Ethiopian-Boeing 777-300LR Freighter

Ethiopian Cargo is the largest cargo operator in Africa serving 24 cargo destinations covering Africa, Middle East, Europe and Asia using 6 dedicated freighters with care, speed and dependability.

Ethiopian cargo took delivery of the first Boeing 777-200 LR Freighter in September 2012, becoming yet again the first carrier in Africa to operate the aircraft.

Boeing 777-200 LR Freighters are the most technologically advanced cargo aircraft with the ability to connect any two points in the world carrying 103 tons of cargo with reduce fuel consumption and less emission. They also have an unrivalled ability to maintain cold temperature of up to 40 ^oC allowing perishable goods reach their destination maintaining their freshness and quality. The aircraft is ideal for the transportation of Ethiopia’s fast growing export of perishable products such flowers, vegetables, fruits and meat.
