HARAMAYA UNIVERSITY PROFILE
Haramaya University (The former Alemaya University) is located at about 510 K.Ms East of Addis Ababa, between Dire-Dawa and Harar towns. The agreement between the government of Ethiopia and the Technical cooperation Administration of the government of United States of America, signed in May, 1952. gave the mandate to Oklahoma State University to establish and operate the collage, conduct a nationwide system of Agricultural, Extension and set up an agricultural research and experimental station. In October, 1952, the Imperial Ethiopian College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts received its first class of fourteen students.
The college become a chartered member of Addis Ababa University (the then Haile Selassie I University), following the contractual termination of Oklahoma State University in 1968. Soon the college was named Alemaya College of Agriculture. A major landmark in the history of the college of agriculture was the opening of graduate study programs in the 1979/80 academic year. Since 1995/96 launching new programs in various field of studies enabled the university to become a full-fledged university with the new name Alemaya University (AU). The university was renamed Haramaya University in February 2006.

Number of Academic Programs
- The University offers a total of 267 programs of which 113 are undergraduate programs; 131 are second degree and 23 are third degree programs.
Intake capacity
Currently The University has 35000 students of which more than 20000 students has enrolled in regular undergraduate program. 6000 students has been admitted in undergraduate and postgraduate annually No of students graduated so far In its 6 decades of endeavors, the university has graduated more than 67,000 graduates in different levels.
Special activities achieved by the university
✓The University is known as a father of Diredawa, Jijiga, and recently oda Bultum University because of playing a major role for their establishment.
✓ It has its own model school which hosts 1-12 grade and children day care in main campus. Because of this, it helps to facilitate learning teaching process especially for female postgraduate students and instructors’ burden because of child care.
✓ The University has so many Almui’s profile currently working higher officials such as several ministers and 10 university’s presidents. In addition, world food prize winner professor Gebisaejeta and other international scientists are outcome of the university.
✓ The university, In 2007 graduating year, in the presence of prime minister of F.D.R.E his Excellency Mr. Haile Mariam Desalegn, regional state governments and other ministers, has given honorable doctorate degree for Djibouti’s president his Excellency Mr. Ismail Omar Guelleh and former the university’s students professor Gebisa Ejeta for their contribution to Ethiopia and Africa.
