Mr. Melvin Jones founded lions Clubs International in 1917 in Chicago. He organized a group of businessmen who were members of an insurance firm (where he was a Secretary to put their talents together for the improvement of their communities. Mr. Melvin Eventually abandoned his insurance agency and devoted his full time to Lionism in Chicago. He invented a personal code “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else’ which became a guiding principle for public-spirited men all over the world.

In Kenya Lions was introduced in 1958 by Paul Manekshaw. In 1959, East Africa saw the formation of Lions District 411 incorporating Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia. From this period both pre-independent and independent governments have been very instrumental in growth of Lionism. Lions Clubs International Objectives:

  1. To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of the world.
  2. To promote the principle of good governance and citizenship.
  3. To take an active interest in the civic, cultural, and moral welfare of the community.
  4. To provide a forum for open discussion of all matters public interest provided, however, that partisan sectarian religion shall not be debated by the members
  5. To serve the community and encourage service mind people to do so without personal financial reward.
  6. To encourage efficiency and promote high eth standards in commerce, industry, professions, pub works and private endeavors.

This Year’s District Governor logo is the sun, which shines, to “Light the path to service” for the betterment of our communities and to serve the less fortunate and underprivileged members of our society.

Eye Camps

Lions Clubs worldwide are working to conquer blindness. Lions Clubs organize Eye Camps to eradicate preventable and curable blindness such as cataract operations, eradication of trachoma and onchocerciasis river blindness). They have also established eye hospitals, glaucoma & diabetic screening clinics, eye banks and rehabilitation institute. Lions Clubs International assists on manpower training of ophthalmologists, cataract surgeons and ophthalmic nurses.

Wheel Chair

The club sponsors many programs for the physically and mentally handicapped, the aged and the underprivileged. Homes have also been constructed for them. Lions Clubs are also involved in providing wheel chairs and Jaipur feet to the physically handicapped.

Water is life

Water is life and water borne diseases are very common in Africa. One of the strategies to prevent Trachoma is to provide pure water to the rural areas. Water Well drilling and water supply system have been constructed and implemented by majority of the Clubs in the District.
