The Ethiopian people together with other progressive forces throughout the world celebrate the Second Anniversary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia under the leadership of the WPE-Workers party of Ethiopia. The working people of Ethiopia by renewing through glorious feats executed with revolutionary fervor the patriotic and heroic history inherited from their forefathers as well as by defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland and safe guarding the revolution, have now arrived at a period of transition to a new phase of struggle. In commemoration of this event, the Ethiopian Postal service issues a set of three stamps featuring the gains of the revolution among the most important events which have been scored in the year.
Featured on the 15c stamp is the Melka Wakena Hydro Electric project. This project is founded on river Wabie Shebelle bordering Arsi and Bale regions. A technical feasibility survey of the project commenced on August 24, 1974 E.C. and the main construction work on August 24,1976 E.C. The major part being completed is operational since 1980 E.C. The Wabie river being diverted from its natural course was made to flow through a man- made canal on which the hydro-electric power with 153 megawatt is commissioned. The project came in effect, by the agreement signed between Ethiopia and two other friendly countries, Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia.
The overall cost for the implementation of the project is Birr 600,8591000 and it is expected to have an estimated capacity of 543 million Kilowatt hours of additional power and this will add 153 M.W (74 %) to the interconnected power stations which are already functioning under EELPA. This in turn will raise the national power supply by 50 % and it is believed it will make immense contribution towards expanding and accelerating the development of existing industries.
Featured in the 75c stamp is Adaberga State Dairy Farm. It is located at a distance of 77k.m. on the west of Addis Ababa in the region of Wes-tern Showa Administration. This modern dairy farm is the biggest of its kind in the country.
Basically, the farm has been established with the objective of meeting the growing demand of urban dwellers for milk and milk products by producing 1.5 million liters per annum and disseminating technical knowhow to the farmers of the region and also to render bull services. The project was studied by the staff of Dairy Development enterprise and administrative body of all state owned farms. The construction work commenced in 1986 and completed in 1988.
The farm has all facilities required for optimum farm management. These include; 8 barns for different age groups, bull shed, milking parlous (2X 10) veterinary unit, concentrate and hay sheds and off-ices and staff residence.
The unit became operational at mid-1988 with 400 pregnant jersy heifers imported from Denmark, Currently, 64 workforce is employed to run the unit while during construction phase over 700 labor force was employed.
The 1-birr stamp portrays the modern Hospital in Pawe. A new modern hospital built at a cost of over 12 million birrs in Pawe district, Metekel province of Gojjam region through the assistance of the Italian government was inaugurated on September 9,1988.
The hospital built in accordance with an agreement reached earlier between the government of PDRE and Italy is equipped, among other things with 132 beds operating theatre, surgical, pediatric and maternity wards
It has residential quarters for workers. The hospital covering 5,300 sq. meters provides services to settlers, workers of government agencies, employees of the Tana Beles project and peasants in the area.
It is incorporated with the former Pawe hospital which was opened in late 1986 and has since provided service to the people of the area. The new hospital will facilitate the provision of better and more efficient health services to the people in the area.
