Human beings live with natural calamities, and themselves add catastrophes. warfare. Aside from the tragedy and suffering involved, these disasters are countries to human development. And those hardest hit in most cases are poorer countries and the poorest of their peoples. United Nations Volunteers are increasingly in the front line of the UN’s efforts to mitigate the worst of such suffering and to bring about the rehabilitation and reconstruction which allow the development Process be resumed.
Set up by the UN General Assembly in 1970, UNV is administered under the UN Development Program (UNDP). It serves as an operational partner in development, humanitarian and peace operations at the request of any UN member state.
Today, UNVs are serving in over 100 humanitarian Projects. Some of those respond to the needs arising from protracted and complex conflict-related emergencies entailing mass displacement of populations where the neutrality of a multinational volunteer operation can be particularly appropriate. The contribution of the UNVs ranges from strengthening local operational centers and delivering urgent relief supplies to providing treatment and counselling for those traumatized and rebuilding capacity and confidence in stricken communities.
UNV aims to accelerate the transition from the disaster situation to resumed work for sustainable human development. Emergency relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction comprise a continuous process in which those affected are helped to resume their normal daily lives. And from the lessons learned, measures are put in place to prevent where possible the recurrence of damage and suffering on a similar se in the future.
