Honorable Doctor Hadis Alemayehu (1902-1990 E.C)
Honorable Doctor Hadis, Alemayehu was born on Tikimt 7, 1902 E.C in the former Gojjam governorate general, Debre Markos Awraja, Gozamin Wereda. He had, for twelve years, studied poetry (quine) and church songs in Debre Elias, Debre work and Dima Giyorgis sanctuaries. In 1918 EC he came to Addis Ababa where the received modern education in different schools. He then served as a teacher for several years at the Swedish Mission School.
Hadis Alemayehu had, during his student days at Tafari Mekonen School gained popularity for presenting plays and producing literary works. His fast every play is entitled “Habesha and Late Marriage”. Before the Italian fascist invasion, he was employed by the Customs office and sent to Gojjam in 1924 E.C.
During his stay in Gojjam, he served as the first Director of Dangila School until 1927 E.C. During the war against Italian Fascist invaders, he joined forces with prince Ras Imeru as a patriot and performed feats of valor. While fighting along with the patriots, he fell into the hands of the Fascist, was taken to Italy and was jailed at Pinza Prison.
Following the end of the war. he cans back to Ethiopia served in different capacities in the Ministry of foreign Affairs. Moreover, he has. with great devotion and sincerity served his country as First Secretary at the Ethiopian Legation in the United States, Ethiopian Ambassador the United Nations office, Ministry of Education and, at last as a member of the Senate and council of Deputies. Hadis Alemayehu has, from 1948 to 1985 E.C, produced literacy works including his quite popular novel entitled “Fikir Iske Makabir” (Love unto the grave); ‘Wonjelgnaw Dagna’ (The Criminal Judge), Teret Teret (Tales) (MINA and ‘Yehilm Jat’ (Day Dreaming). By so doing, he has not only gained wide ranging populating but has made great contribution to the nations and the generations.
He has, as a result of his important contributions in the fed of literature when Ha Selassie l prize in 1960 E. C. He has also received an Honorable Doctorate Degree from Addis Ababa University on Hidar 27, 1996 E.C. The Honorable Doctor Hadis Alemayehu passed away at the age of 93 On Hidar 27, 1996 E.C.
Laureate Tsegaye Gebre Medhine (1921-1997 E.C)
Post and playwright Tsegaye Gebire Madhine was born during the crucible of the Fascist invasion of Ethiopia in 1928 E.C near the vicinity of Ambo town, called Bode locality. Young Tsegaye’s educational itinerary then takes him to formal higher schooling at home (Wingate and commercial school) and abroad (Blackstone school of law) in Chicago where he took his Bar exam but his precocious self-reading of his inner needs, moods and proclivities pointed towards pastures for artistic and literary expression. And so, he Pursued opportunities to visit and apprentice at experimental theater and drama entombments in Britain, France and Italy in early 1960s E.C
In addition to wrong and producing Amharic plays including Yedem Azmera (Blood Harvest), Yeshoh Aklil (Crown of Thorns) and Joro Degef (Mumps) during this period, playwright Tsegaye also wrote scores of short poems in English some of which are reproduced in Ethiopia Observer. (1965). And he wrote a prize-winning essay for Fulbright Fellowship competition on what does world Brotherhood mean to me, in1959, of the five Amharic plays produced by Poet Laureate Tsegaye between 1966 and 1969 E C four of them: Ha Hu Besidst Wer (ABC in Six Months), Inat Alem Tenu (adapted from Bertold Brecht’s Mother Courage) and Melekte Wez Ader (Message of tie Worker). Ha hu weym Bebu (ABC or …) were won grate appreciations from the audiences. Tsegaye has also written a pottery anthology entitled Essat wey Abeba (Fire or Flower) poet Laureate Tsegaye has translated into Amharic Shakespeare everlasting works Including Hamlet Macbeth, King Lear and Othello. He has produced a lot of plays could not be Performed on stage because they were totally banned by the Derg Regime.
Tsegayes English play called ‘The Oda Oob Oracle’ which was translated into French. Italian. Danish and Romanian languages have won great admiration, and received wide acclaim. Between the years 1953 and 1967 EC, Poet Laureate Tsegaye has worked in different capacities at the Ethiopian National Thaler and Oxford University Press which was located In Addis Ababa. Besides, he had served the former Ministry of Culture with the rank of Assistant for the minister and as Assistant Professor at Adds Ababa University. Department of Education in 1968 EC the Derg regime threw Tsegaye to prison in reaction to the plays he staged to the public at the time
In 1963 E.C, Laureate Tsegaye received a Fulbright Award from Shekh Anta Dupe University boated in Dakar, Senegal for the cultural study and research he had conducted.

Honorable Dr. Kebede Michael (1900-1901 E.C)
Dr. Kebede Michael was born on Tekemit 23. 1909 E C n Ethiopia in the suburb of Debre Birehan town called Gerem Gebriel. Kebede received church education in his early are days on he came lo Addis Ababa and joined catholic Catedral School as a boarding Student. He then went lo Lazarist mission where he completed grade seven. In due course, Kebede went to alliance Ethio-France school where he received training in language and literature.
During his student years Kebede proved that he had a high receipts capacity for education. He had such a strong bent for the French Language so much. So that he scored high grades in French exams in fact he had wonderful command of the French language. Emperor Haile Sellasie who was aware of Kebede’s qualities and potentials granted him a free Scholarship opportunity to go to France and Pursue his studies. Unfortunately, Kebede could not make use of that wonderful Opportunity because he was taken eat the time.
Kebede had a great inclination towards assimilating general knowledge and the study of languages. So. he never laid idle. He continued lo make consistent effort in the study of languages and in gathering general knowledge. With the passage of time, Kabede had a deep knowledge of Geez and Amharic languages. He also had a good command of English and French languages. Kebede used to write in all these languages. Not only that, He did a lot of translation works in all the just mentioned language.
Honorable Dr. Kebede has. after the defeat of Fascist Italian invaders, rendered the following services to his county. as “journalist and Radio Program Announcer, Director General of the ministry of Education, Director General and by representative in the Ministry of foreign Affairs, (Director of Postal Administration, director of his Imperial Majesty’s Private Information Cabinet, Director of National Library and Archives. Kebede had participated in important international conferences as a special representative extra-ordinary and plenipotentiary of the Ethiopia in government (representative in extra-ordinary and plenipotentiary of the Ethiopian government).
Honorable Dr. Kebede Michael has published well over thirty books dealing with various issues. Some of these are as follows: Plays entitled “Belaineh”, “Yetinbit Ketero”; poetry books entitled “Tarikina Missale” Yekine Azmra” and ” Yedirset Tinsae”. He also published books on general knowledge entitled Talalak Sewoch”, “Yoslitane Ayer’, ‘Anibal” (Hanibal) and “Japan Indemin (endiet) Seletenech’. About five of his books have been translated into French and English languages. Moreover, he has translated from English into Amharic two plays entitled “Romeo and Juliet” and “Beyond Pardon”. Kebede Michael was the first ever winner of Haile Selassie I Prize Award in Amharic Literature. He was a distinguished Ethiopian personality who was also award ed Honorable Doctorate Degree by Addis Ababa University. Honorable Doctor Kebede Michael died at the age of 84 in 1991 E.C.
Honorable Doctor Sinidu Gebru (1908-2001 E.C)
Honorable Dr. Sinidu Gebru was born on Tir 6, 1908 E.C in Shoa Region, Addis Alom town. She was the daughter of his Excellency Mayor Gabru Desta, 1848 – 1942, EC. Honorable Doctor Sinidu came to Addis Ababa where she attended Swedish Mission School up to grade sight. In 1921 E.C. she went to Switzerland along with her sister Woizero Yewibdar later renamed ‘Imahoy – Mother Tsigie). During her stay in Switzerland, Sinidu realized that she couldn’t easily learn or get used to the German language.
After withdrawal from study, Sinidu made her way to France where she pursued her education and received diploma after compilation. She then joined another edition where she studied literature, history, French and English Languages. Upon her return to Ethiopia, Sinidu started her service as a teacher in St. George School located in Addis Ababa. A few years services, Italian fascists invaded Ethiopia. During that period, she went on a mission along with the Ethiopian Red Cross volunteers and rendered medical services to members of the Ethiopian army. Aller having been fully aware of the fact that Addis Ababa was under the fascist occupation, Sinidu made her way to the western part of the country, Illubabor (Gore), where she joined the patriotic forces. But unfortunately, she fell in to enemy hands and was brought back to Addis Ababa along with other patriots. She was then banished to an island called Azinare Island located in Italy where she stayed under imprisonment.
Sinidu returned to her country after liberation from enemy occupation was insured. Following her return to Ethiopia, Sinidu served as director of Wezero Sihin School and Empress Menen School located in Desie town and in Addis Ababa respectively. In due course, Sinidu went on consolidating her active participation in political and administrative areas. As a result of such efforts, she became the first female parliamentary elect She became member of the Senate and through completion was elected as a Vice President. She served in that capacity from 1948 – 1952 E.C. Besides, Sinidu had served as: President of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, Chief Secretary and Administrator in the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and as education attaché in West Germany for three years. Sindu was well known for her active participation in philanthropic organizations.
Sindu is a well-known literary figure and playwright with many works to her name in Amharic language. These include “Kokeb yallew yaberal Gena” (The Shiny star will be glorified). Yenuro Sihtet, (Misstated in life), “Yelibe Metsahaf”, (The Book of my Heart). ‘Kemaichew Melse’ (Return from Maichew and many other literary writers.
In recognition of her literary works and her services, Addis Ababa University honored Sinidu with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in 1997 E.C. Such an iron lady and literary giant, the Honorable Doctor Sinidu, died at the age of 93 on 12, 2001 E.C.
