A few Points About Haile Gebresellasie
He is one of the most prominent figures in the world. Most people. even if they never met him, recognize his name. Many smiles in admiration when they see him on their television screens. Those who are close to the sports world always raise the question ” Is Gebreselassie Participating?” His fame has also made his motherland famous. We are therefore proud of him!
The modest and cheerful Gebreselassie is not only endowed with sporting prowess alone like many sportsmen. but he is also a mature. staunch and very Disciplined person.
He was horn during the 1974 Ethiopian revolution in the former Arssi administrative region. The rural town where he was born is called Dara and it is very close to Assela, the regional capital. He was engaged in agricultural and pastoral activities till he joined school. even alter joining school he helped his family in those activities.
Having joined the Assela Junior Secondary School in 1979/80, he was promoted to the Senior Secondary School where he completed I2° grade. He started competing in athletics in 1988 when he was a tenth-grade student. At that time there was a students’ sports competition called Spartakiad. He participated in 1,500 and 3000 meters. and won in both.
In 1989. he won the regional competition in 1,500 and 3000 meters. He was then included in the Athletics pilot project which was supported by the Ethiopian Airlines. In 1990 he got employed by the Arssi Police Sports’ club and was transferred to Addis Ababa the following year.
In 1991. he took part in the Jan-meda International Cross-Country competition. He stood filth in the 8 kilo-meters youth category and was selected to compete at the world youth championship. Then he went to Belgium representing Ethiopia at the World Youth Championship that same year. He stood eighth. Following this his story is very lone and well recorded by the media.
On average he was participating in 15 International Competitions every year. This means that he has solar participated in 100-120 International competitions. Regarding results, it is better to cite the ones in which he didn’t succeed. As pointed out earlier, he stood eighth in his first Cross Country championship in Belgium. In 1993. he took part in Adult’s competition and stood seventh.
Following that. he stood fourth in Durham. Besides, he stood second and third in very few competitions. Mostly he stands first
