The Ethiopian People Together with other Progressive forces throughout the World celebrate the First Anniversary of the People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia under the leadership of the WPE (workers party of Ethiopia). The working people of Ethiopia by renewing through glorious feats executed with revolutionary fervor the Patriotic and heroic history inherited from their forefathers as well as by defending the Sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Motherland and safeguarding the Revolution have now arrived at a period of transition to a new Phase of Struggle. In commemoration of this event, the Ethiopian Postal Service issued a set of four Stamps Featuring the gains of the revolution among the most important events which have been scored.

Featured in the 5c stamp is the First Historic Session of the National Shengo. The First ever democratically elected National Shengo in the history of Ethiopia began its inaugural Session on 9 Sept. 1987 to found the people’s ‘Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The Shengo is the Supreme organ of state power in the PDRE.

The National Shengo which is the representative organ of the working People has been established and has commenced its work. Pursuant to the constitution, which the Ethiopian’ People approved’ by referendum. The people’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is established as of the 13th Day of September, 1987. The National Shengo, which is the re-preventative organ of the working people, has state Power transferred to it from the Provisional Military Administrative Council as of the 13th day of September, 1987.

The 10c stamp Shows the First President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (PDRE). The First session of the National Shengo (Assembly) on 10 September 1987 unanimously elected Comrade 1Viengistu Haile Mariam as president of the People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He has been acclaimed far and wide as well-deserved recognition of the great services he has rendered to Ethiopia and his special contributions to peace and mutual understanding among peoples.

His complex understanding of complex phenomena in relation to the objective conditions prevailing in the Country, his formulation of correct strategies of struggle and, in general, his mature leadership capability has won him acclamation far beyond the territorial confines of our Country. The Ethiopian People, under the Committed and able leadership of comrade Mengistu, will vigorously Pursue their legitimate’ objectives and build a Socialist Society on the basis of the brilliant achievements already scored.

The 80c stamp portrays the coat of arms of the people’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. It is a special Symbol that represents the valiant, freedom loving people of Ethiopia, evoking their history and resounding their being.

Depicted in the 1.00 Birr stamp is the inauguration of the state Council Building. A new building to house the state Council of People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia was inaugurated on 12 September 1987.

The building was inaugurated by comrade Mengistu Haile-Mariam, General Secretary of the CC. of the WPE, President of the people’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and commander in chief of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. The sevens-storey building of the Council of states has modern offices for the president and for vice-president of the PDRE, and for Vice Presidents of the Council of state as well as offices for various sections and Departments of the state-Council.
