In 1982 the UN designated 1986 as the International Year of Peace. The idea won wide support for governments and peoples around the world.
The World Peace Council, that has planted and pre-served the tree of peace on the very ruins of second world war should more than ever intensify its struggle. The tree of peace should never welter, nor eyes brimming with happiness be ever covered by the mist of war. The struggle that conducts in defense of peace cannot be isolated from the struggle be lay on a firm footing national liberation and the social and economic progress of mankind.
As the promotion of peace is the basic objective of the UN, Governments have used the UN to limit conflicts which could otherwise have spread. The security council and the secretary general have often had an invaluable role in encouraging negotiations an preventing an escalation of hostiles. The organization has also used troops from neutral countries to police troubled areas. There have been over a dozen major peaceful keeping efforts.
The development of nuclear weapons has made the problem critical. The nuclear arms race constitutes a grave threat to World Peace and security. The ultimate goal of nuclear disarmament should be the complete prohibition and through destruction of nuclear weapons. Outer space should be used exclusively for peaceful purposes for the benefit of all mankind. No country should develop, test or deploy space weapon in any form.
Revolutionary Ethiopia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council is keenly aware of her responsibility to defend peace to work with all peace-loving people the world over to help prevent another world war, promote human progress, and create a better more secure more prosperous world for later generations.
